Evaluation Question 2

My music video and ancillary tasks have been designed to resemble one another in order to create synergy throughout the tasks. This synergy is found throughout real media products and I have used it for the sake of making my media products easily identifiable to my audience.

Due to my positive audience feedback and the synergy created between the media products, I feel that they have been successful in engaging the audience and promoting the artist and her work.

Through my research I have found that the magazine adverts promoting an album is typically the same design and regularly uses the same images from the album/digipak. In some cases the image is exactly the same on both.

I decided not to take an image directly from the music video as I wanted the advert and digipak to be able to stand separately from the music video – commonly found throughout a variety of adverts and digipaks that I have found. Also I felt it worked well in that way and is more eye catching and interesting to look at than it would have been if I had taken shots from the video. I think that it has too much focus on in the parts with the sun and the clouds and would have no focus point if seen in a shop or magazine. Although I could have used other shots from the music video, I feel that if you are going to use the music video for the digipak, it should be many different shots and I don’t think that this would have made an effective digipak or advert.

The following are a selection of comments from my survey on SurveyMonkey which I used to collect feedback on the music video and ancillary tasks to help me see if they were successful products.

do you think one promo packageThis pie chart shows the results of a survey that I conducted showing that the audience of these products felt that they looked as if they were part of one promotional package. As the aim of a series of promotional products are to be related to one another and clearly display the artist I feel as if this shows that my products are quite successful.

One respondent was familiar with Regina Spektor’s work and liked the way that I used the dance poses in the digipak and advert:

“All [products] follow patterns and reference the same things, like time. Also because Regina Spektor is Russian, I like the reference to her roots with the dance/ballet poses.”

After getting audience feedback, I found that my pieces of work were eye catching and therefore capable of promoting the artist. Also, the designs that I have used have common themes, which is particularly clear in the digipak and the magazine advert as they use the same images and colours in order to convey to the audience that they are all part of one promotional package. The idea was to make an easily recognisable style for this set of promotional media which would enable the audience to clearly see the synergy in the separate pieces, alongside the recognisable style to become memorable to the audience.

Interviewees have stated that they thought the bright colours were a good choice as there is often a lack of colour in album covers and adverts and my use of them will draw the attention of my target audience more easily.

It was also commented that the synergy of the pieces created a clear brand across all 3 forms of media that the audience could connect with.

Evaluation Question 1

    The Digipak:

Following conDIGIPAK COMPLETEventions I opted to have my actor feature on the front cover of the digipak, however I felt that simply appearing on the digipak wouldn’t have that quirky feel that Regina Spektor expresses. Therefore I added a filter to the image of Celaine which made the image more simple and only made out of about 8 different colours.

The CD section appears to commonly be a repeat of the main album art made to fit onto the CD instead. On some occasions it is a simple design or the artists’ logo but I wanted to have a clock, as time is the main focus of the song, as the CD. While this does cKatyPerryhallenge conventions, this has been done before and often works well as for the consumer, they receive extra album art and the creator of the digipak has more freedom in what they create.

Here is an example of a set of CDs that does challenge these conventions and suits the style of the rest of the digipak still. Whereas the following digipak just uses the album art on the CD and the result is it being less interesting to look at and therefore is less encouraging to a consumer to buy.Digipak

The Magazine Advert:Magazine Album

I intended my magazine advert to mostly follow conventions as the point of it is to attract the appropriate audience and for this reason I felt that challenging conventions too much could result in an advert that was ineffective.

I designed the advert to be very similar to the album cover in order to create synergy between the pieces. I took the black version of the cut out of Celaine as I felt that the colour version was too much for the poster and took away focus from the text which is the most important part as this gets the vital information across to the audience and the coloured image looked too distracting.

jake buggThe style is very much like adverts of similar artists. Here Jake Bugg’s album shows how I have created a product in the style of existing products. The key information is put across and his advert is very similar to his album which contains all the same colours and the shadow is from the pose he is standing in on his album cover.

Slightly challenging conventions I decided to add in an image that hasn’t been used either on the digipak or in the video. This is uncommon as it can make it harder for the audience to relate the advert to the digipak or video as it may change the style or colouring. However with this image of the clock, I felt that it worked on this poster as it balanced the image and filled in otherwise blank space, but also the image is relevant with the idea of time being the main focus of the music video, and a similar image of a clock is used in the digipak. For these reasons I feel that the challenging of conventions has resulted in a more effective advert.

Often the adverts will have the record label logo displayed at the bottom which I have also added to my advert.

Reshooting

Looking back at my music video and feedback that I have received I want to go back and re-shoot the performance sections of the music video in the drama studio. This way I will be able to do faster cuts to the music which will hopefully make the music video appear to be more realistic and fit the genre and form of an actual music video better.

A new schedule for this is as follows:

Digipak Vote

I created 2 versions of my digipak where the inside left panel was either Celaine sat down drinking tea from a vintage looking cup and saucer, or where there were 4 images of her that had been manipulated to look like the album cover where she is holding a clock in different positions.

I decided to let my audience vote on the panel as I wanted to see what they wanted rather than just choosing one myself. I thought that this would be a better idea than choosing it myself as this way the audience would get to have the digipak as what they wanted and expect to see therefore more likely to be a successful digipak.

I created a survey on Survey Monkey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GR5GPLB   and I asked people from my target audience to go onto the website and vote on the panel.

Overall the results showed that the image of Celaine holding the clocks in different positions was the favourite of my target audience.
